YouTube videos back online in the U.K.
September 3, 2009
YouTube has just concluded a deal with PRS for Music that will allow visitors to the U.K. site access to thousands of music videos that had been blocked for the six months of the dispute.
PRS for Music collects royalties on behalf of composers and musicians in the U.K. and has just signed a deal for an undisclosed sum with YouTube’s owners Google to allow them to keep streaming the videos.
YouTube’s director of video partnerships, Patrick Walker has said that he is pleased that an agreement has been reached and that the company looked forward to getting videos back up on the U.K. site. He added that it had been a tough decision to start blocking videos back in March.
YouTube is the world’s biggest video sharing site and the new deal has been back dated to January this year and will continue until June 2012.
The deal covers music videos as well as videos created by people at home and music that may feature in the background of television clips.
The company remains in disagreement with Warner Brothers who are the third biggest music group in the world and is currently not officially allowed to play their music. This has resulted in videos by artists such as Madonna being blocked on the site.
YouTube is said to be in talks with major film studios about being able to put full length feature films up on the site.
