New information has emerged regarding the rescue of the sole survivor of the Yemenia Airways crash in the Indian Ocean off the Comoros Islands.

A French rescue worker said that he spotted the 14-year-old girl hanging onto debris from the plane’s wreckage in choppy seas, and that she was shaking as he pulled her out of the water.

She was taken to a hospital in Moroni, the Comoros capital. Searchers reported recovering five bodies, but no other survivors.

Early on Tuesday, the plane crashed in severe weather conditions, with 153 people on board. At the time of the crash, the Airbus A310 had been making a second landing attempt.

The rescue worker told France’s Europe 1 radio about finding the crash survivor: “We tried to throw a life buoy. She could not grab it. I had to jump in the water to get her,” adding: “She was shaking, shaking. We put four sheets on her. We gave her hot, sugary water. We simply asked her name, village.”

Dr Ada Mansour treated the young girl to the hospital in Moroni, and said to the AFP that she was conscious and able to speak, but: “We are trying to warm her up because she was freezing.”

The girl, believed to be from Marseille, was travelling to the Comoros with her mother.
