Yahoo launches revamped web portal
September 23, 2009
As of today, Yahoo’s newly packaged web portal will roll out worldwide. The re launch will be accompanied by a $100 million global advertising campaign which will target ten countries, including some in the emerging markets, as well as those already familiar with the Yahoo brand.
Analysts tend to agree that Yahoo’s marketing is a good thing. Many say that the company needs to move ahead from the recent years that have seen it lose market share to Google, lose a number of its leading executives and lose a great deal of company morale as it endlessly reorganized itself. Analysts also agree that new chief executive officer; Carol Bartz has managed to project a stabilising influence over the company since she arrived in January.
Yahoo’s re launch comes as it struggles to turn a once market leading position on the web into profit. Last year the giant made only $141 million in profit on revenues of $1.57 billion.
Rich Riley, Yahoo’s senior vice-president for Europe says that the Yahoo sites openness to rival brands will help its success. Yahoo’s customisable applications will allow users to get a snapshot of everything that is happening across their favourite websites all from within the Yahoo portal. The Yahoo homepage is now open to email sites like Hotmail and social networking sites like Facebook. Riley said that in recent research one of the things customers most wanted was a single place on the internet where they could go to organize everything that they use the web for. Riley says that the new Yahoo site is the answer to that need.
