World’s biggest casino expands presence in the U.K.
September 14, 2009
The U.K.’s second biggest online gambling site, 888 has signed a deal with Harrah’s, the world’s largest casino company to provide a tie up that could see 888 move back into the U.S.
Gigi Levy, 888’s chief executive officer said that the multi million dollar deal would allow the expansion of Harrah’s and its brands World Series of Poker and Caesars Casino in the U.K. 888 will deal with customer services and payment on Harrah’s behalf. He went onto say that if online gambling becomes legal in the U.S. then the deal would mean an easy leg up into the U.S. market where online companies will need services and infrastructure.
At present U.S. congress is being lobbied to allow online gambling sites to be able to accept wagers online. Internet gaming services have been barred in the U.S. since congress prohibited the collection of payments from credit card companies in 2006.
Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment has been set up to look after the World Series of Poker brand online and the division is being run by Mitch Garber who used to be chief executive officer at PartyGaming who own PartyPoker and PartyCasino.
The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2009 went to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security in June. It lays out regulations for allowing gamblers in the U.S. to have their bets accepted by the online sites.
If the act is passed then it will see the return of companies like 888 to the American market which they were forced to leave in 2006.
