Woman Poisons Curry to Murder Former Lover

February 11, 2010

Lakhvir Kaur Singh, a 44-year-old wife and mother of 3, is facing a life jail sentence after murdering her lover in 2008. The woman sneaked into Lakhvinder’s Cheema’s, 36, home to sprinkle a deadly ancient herb, Indian aconite, into some curry. The man was eating the dish with his fiancee, Gurjeet Choough, now 22, while talking about their Valentine’s Day wedding, which they planned for 2009.

Singh and and Cheema were related by marriage and kept their love a secret so that their family wouldn’t be shamed. However, the 16-year affair ended in November 2008 when he announced he would marry and start a family with Choough. Not long after this, Singh went to India, which is when she is thought to have obtained the herb, and a few days after returning, Cheema was hospitalized for a week, but recovered from an illness.

Cheema continued planning the wedding with Choough, so Singh continued a plan to keep it from happening, which is when she put the herb in the curry. At the time, her husband was abroad receiving cancer treatment.

It only a few minutes for the poison to kick in, which left Cheema and Choough blinded and their arms and legs paralyzed. He was able to tell somebody that he suspected Singh of the poisoning. Only an hour after arriving at the hospital, his heart stopped, but Choough survived after being in a coma for the past 2 years.

Singh claims to have had 3 abortions and sacrificing everything for Cheema, but a court on Wednesday found her guilty of murdering him and intent to cause heinous bodily harm to Choough. She is the first person to be convicted of using aconite to poison and kill another since 1882, when Dr. George Lamson murdered his brother-in-law and was then hanged.
