Woman faces court in Tesco rubbish row

February 14, 2011

A woman has been accused of “theft by finding” after taking home food that had been thrown out by Tesco following a power cut. Sasha Hall, 21, is facing a trial after she and dozens of others helped themselves to thousands of pounds worth of “spoilt” goods that were left on the street in Great Baddow, Essex, by the supermarket giant.

Ms Hall was taken to her local police station in handcuffs after officers knocked on her door and arrested her for theft by finding. The shop worker said she simply wanted to put the food to better use rather than leaving it to rot on the streets.

Ms Hall added that she was made to feel like a common criminal when the police came to her house to arrest her. She went on to say that she would have hoped the police had better things to do with their time than picking up people who had taken unwanted potato waffles off the street.
The 21-year-old said it was clear that the supermarket, whose motto is “every little helps”, did not want the food that could feed her family for a week. Ms Hall, who earns just £600 a month, is accused of taking £200 worth of food.

A spokesman for Tesco said the company tries to minimise waste wherever possible through reuse and recycling schemes. Referring to Ms Hall’s upcoming court appearance, the spokesman said the supermarket is “assisting the police with their inquiries”.
