Warner Bros. sets up DC Entertainment

September 11, 2009

Just a week after Disney agreed to pay $4 billion for Marvel Comics, Warner Bros. has decided to form DC Entertainment which it hopes will maximize the potential of the DC Comics across formats such as film, television and computer games.

Diane Nelson is to move across from Warner Premiere to become president at DC Entertainment. She has recently been extremely successful at bringing the Harry Potter books to the big screen and will continue to look after the brand in her new role. Harry Potter has generated box office takings of over $5.4 billion along with earning billions more through games and DVD sales.

Warner Bros. hopes that Nelson will be able to work her magic with the stable of characters in the DC comics. Recently the studio’s only hit with a character from DC has been Batman. Batman Begins made $373 million and its sequel, The Dark Knight topped 1 billion at the box office. Other DC characters fared a little worse at the box office. The high hopes for Watchmen never materialized and Superman Returns and Catwoman could generously be described as flops.

Warner Bros. say that the cornerstone of DC Entertainment will still be the comics themselves. They will continue to create 90 comic books and 30 graphic novels each month. DC Entertainment will be looking at tapping into the back catalogue of DC Comics to search out less well known characters with the potential for development through other media.

Warner Bros currently has several DC projects in development including The Green Lantern and Jonah Hex.
