Vodafone now offers DRM-free music from Warner
September 22, 2009
Vodafone is now the first mobile phone operator to be able to offer its customers DRM- free music from the world’s four largest music companies. Vodafone has just signed a deal which will add Warner Music to EMI, Sony Music and Universal Music as partners of the mobile company through which customers can receive music direct to their mobile phones.
The music downloads will come without any anti-piracy software or Digital Rights Management restrictions. This means that customers will be able to play the music on any device they like, including iPods. Deals between mobile phone companies and Music companies benefit both parties at a time when arguments over music piracy are raging.
Vodafone Internet Services Director, Pieter Knook says that the customer reaction to being given access to DRM-free music has been extremely positive. He went on to say that customers have reacted especially well to the flexibility the system offers. Music companies will also be pleased with the mobile phone tie ups as it gives them access to revenue at a time when it is being lost to those taking advantage of file sharing sites to download music for free.
The partnership with Warner Music will now allow Vodafone to offer around 1 million tracks from its catalogue for download. Vodafone will work in partnership with Warner Music not just to offer songs but also bundles that will include a range of media content. The service is presently available to customers in the U.K, Ireland, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain and will be pushed out to other regions in the near future.
