Under-2s should not watch television
October 14, 2009
A new Australian report has recommended that all children should not be allowed to watch television until they are at least two years old. The study suggests that exposure to too much television at a young age reduces a child’s attention span and can retard communication abilities. The report also warns that inactivity is bad for young children and so they should also not spend too much time reading or drawing.
The report is the first ever devised to outline recommended viewing habits and also says that children aged between 3-years and 5-years should be limited to only one hour a day in front of the television. The Get Up And Grow report says that in Australia youngsters are more likely to spend their time in front of a television than doing any other activity. Too much time staring at a screen can cause a child to lose the basic ability to communicate or concentrate.
The report has been welcomed by child-care experts across Australia who have long been calling for a ban on allowing youngsters from having access to too much television. Chief executive of the Australian Council on Children and the Media, Barbara Biggins says that it is much more important that children are encouraged to be active, even if that activity is simply watching an insect.
