The U.K. travel and tourism industry has committed to a deadline of 2023 for making the industry sustainable. The charity, Forum for the Future which is dedicated to sustainable development will be in charge of overseeing the plans and has the support of Defra.

Tourism 2023 was unveiled at the ABTA Travel Convention and is an idea committed to by leading players in the travel sector such as British Airways, Carnival Cruises and Thomas Cook. The new venture will be aimed at helping the U.K.’s travel and tourism industry whilst planning for a greener, more environmentally sustainable future.

Dan Norris, minister for rural affairs and the environment said that he welcomed the partnership’s commitment and was looking forward to seeing their ideas put into action. He also hoped that other groups would be encouraged to become involved.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA’s CEO said that if the U.K.’s travel sector wanted to compete successfully with the rest of the world then it was vital that the industry came up with financially viable solutions to future problems immediately. Managing director of TUI Travel U.K. and Ireland, Dermot Blastland added that by combining their efforts members of Tourism 2023 would be able to come up with solutions for the future sustainability of the industry far more effectively than they could possibly do on their own.
