UK retailers stop deliveries in Scotland

December 14, 2010

The UK’s largest retail chains have shut down delivery orders on their websites as extreme weather continues to dampen UK roads and railways.

Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda all suspended delivery orders online for their Scottish customers as the transport network across the country virtually shut down with icy conditions last week. With many retailers struggling to make-up for last week’s stoppages, Scottish customers can no longer place online orders and expect to receive them in time for Christmas.

Couriers are also having a hard time getting rid of a backlog of deliveries as heavy snowfall continues to plague lorries and other transport vehicles. Home Delivery Network and Parcel Force reported they were both catching up on last week’s deliveries and said that they had momentarily stopped accepting deliveries.

Boots and Marks & Spencer have also shut down their online services, as the hectic Christmas shipping season remains in full swing despite wintry conditions. Dangerous road conditions have led to serious travel restrictions.

Tesco Direct’s website says that the retailer can no longer take orders and guarantee their arrival by Christmas for customers ordering in Scotland. Sainsbury’s website had a similar message. Tesco further said that its top priority currently, was to ensure that customers that had already ordered would receive their packages on time. However, the group did say that online grocery deliveries were still able to run.
