U.K. plans ticketless ticket system for public transport

August 21, 2009

The British government has announced plans to introduce a nationwide Integrated Ticketing System (ITSO) of paying for travel on public transport. They plan to enable payment through SIM cards and mobile phones. Pre paid amounts could be loaded onto the phone and debited off when the customer passes an electronic terminal.

Another idea is to allow customers to pay for travel through a form of “contactless” payment that would allow travelers to pass a bank card over a terminal. The price of travel would then be taken straight off of the card.

The government made its announcement pointing to the success of the Oyster Card system that it claims is used for 78 percent of all travel on London’s buses and underground.

To encourage rail franchises and bus services to employ the new system the government has said that it will pay higher rates to those who were equipped with the ITSO smart card readers.

The government estimates that the new system will save up to £2 billion per year by improving journey times and making the purchase of tickets quicker and more reliable. It said that the new ITSO system would help out local government as well as transport operators.
