U2 fans angered by new Berlin Wall

November 6, 2009

Fans of the band U2 tried to rip down a wall erected by organizers of a ‘free’ concert in Berlin that was supposed to be a celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago. The ironic situation was not lost on those who had turned up to see the band perform. A white tarpaulin had been draped over a fence that meant that fans who gathered on the street to see the band were denied access.

Organisers of the MTV Europe Video Awards say that tickets to the show were sold out within three hours of their going online. One U2 fan said that he had assumed that when MTV announced that U2 would be playing a free concert in Berlin that the show would actually be free to all. He went on to condemn MTV for making the show only available to those lucky enough to have obtained tickets and MTV viewers at home.

MTV have released a statement saying that the temporary wall was erected by a local promoter to ensure that businesses, fans and residents were kept safe. 10,000 tickets to the U2 show were made available online that took place next to the Brandenburg Gate which used to be just inside the limits of the old East Berlin. The Berlin Wall was taken down in 1989 representing the fall of communism across Western Europe. U2 produced their album Achtung Baby in East Berlin just before the wall came down. Hopefully they too will appreciate the MTV organiser’s mistake.
