TUI sees 15 percent drop in summer passenger numbers

According to TUI AG, TUI Travel’s majority shareholder, the total number of customers on the tour operator’s summer holidays this year is down by 15 per cent, year-on-year.

Turnover from bookings is reported to be down by 13 per cent. The travel company has described the current level of bookings as “developing in line with expectations.”

Selling prices in the UK continue to run approximately 10 per cent ahead of last year, on average, with sales volumes in line with the 14 per cent reduction in capacity.

TUI has said that its programme load factor is 58 per cent, which is nearly the same as last year.

Trading continues to improve, with sales in the last eight weeks down by 11 per cent, as compared with cumulative booking volumes, which are down by 17 per cent.

Recently, long-haul holiday demand has been “particularly strong” is spite of the swine flu outbreak in Mexico. In the last two weeks, bookings have risen by two per cent, as compared with a 25 per cent decline in cumulative bookings.

Customer demand has made a recent switch from Mexico – due to the travel advisories to that country – to other medium- and long-haul destinations, including Jamaica, which has seen a 30 per cent increase over the last two weeks, Egypt, which is up by 23 per cent and the Dominican Republic, up 19 per cent.
