Top lawyer to join Amanda Knox legal team
January 5, 2010
The team of lawyers who will appeal against Amanda Knox’s twenty-six year sentence for the murder of Meredith Kercher has been joined by top American criminal defence lawyer Theodore ‘Ted’ Simon. He will work alongside Carlo Dalla Vedova and Luciano Ghirga who are Knox’s Italian lawyers as a U.S. consultant. Mr. Simon is well known for representing Americans who find themselves in trouble overseas and is secretary of America’s Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers.
Speaking about Amanda Knox’s conviction for sexual assault and murder, Mr. Simon said that it was wrongful and tragic. He said that he was very much looking forward to working with the Italian legal team and the Knox family to find a way of securing the twenty-two-year-olds release.
It is thought that the process of appeal will begin in March but it is unlikely that anything will go in front of a court until the end of the year. Knox has now seen her third Christmas in jail. Her trial for the assault and murder of the British student in what has been described as an extreme sex game which ended in Ms. Kercher being stabbed to death lasted nearly a year. Knox has always protested her innocence and her father said that the addition of Ted Simon to the legal team representing his daughter will be a great asset. Mr. Simon said that there were systems in place that could be used to ensure that the wrong that has been done to Amanda Knox can be righted.
