The wait is over for Strictly Come Dancing

September 18, 2009

The long awaited seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing rolls out onto U.K. screens this evening. The show will run each Saturday night until the middle of December. For the first two weeks however the show will go out on Friday and Saturday nights, a first in the series’ history. Friday nights will be for fans of ballroom dancing and Saturday is for those who prefer a Latin flavour. The results of the shows will be announced on the Saturday night shows.

The winners and losers will be voted for by the audience and also a team of judges. The two lowest scoring couples will be asked to take part in a dance off with the judges then deciding who will be allowed to survive another week and who will be going home.

As usual Bruce Forsyth, or The Legend as he has become known, will oversee proceedings with his co-host Tess Daly.

Strictly Come Dancing is one of the BBC’s most lucrative exports. In 2007 it made the BBC in the region of 100 million in foreign revenues.

Among this year’s dancing celebrities are Linda Bellingham, Phil Tuffnel (apparently already a favorite to be leaving the show early) and Martina Hingis who will strut their stuff for the cameras along with their professional dancing partners and coaches.

Sharon Osbourne was among those offered a part on the show but she allegedly broke down in hysterics when the BBC told her how much she would get paid. Richard Madeley and the Duchess of York were also approached but politely declined.
