The Falklands launches campaign for travelers
August 25, 2009
The Falkland Island Tourist Board has teamed up with U.K. broadsheet, The Guardian to launch a marketing campaign to attract tourists to the islands.
Jake Downing, general manager of the tourist board said when explaining why he had chosen the Guardian that: “Guardian newspaper readers are affluent, well educated, well travelled and have a keen sense of adventure.”
The tourist board and the Guardian’s editorial team have worked together to develop a mini website that will run alongside the newspapers main website.
Downing said that because the Guardians website gets around 9 million visitors per month the possibilities are much greater than with a simple print advertisement. The aim of the microsite is to raise awareness, understanding and knowledge of the opportunities for travel both on and around the Falkland Islands.
The site contains a photo gallery and information on what there is to do and see on the islands. It also provides links to other sites that visitors might find useful, and there is a competition to win a holiday.
Dowling said of the campaign: “It’s all part of ensuring that our tourism market is protected, prepared and developed for the long-term, so that we are able to reap the benefits when the economy picks up again.”
