The Bugaboo is still strolling along
September 8, 2009
The Bugaboo pushchair is turning ten years old and has arguably graduated from the must have pushchair for young celebrities into the grown-up’s pushchair of choice. The brain child of Max Barenbrug, who runs the company in Amsterdam, it was designed initially as a reaction to badly designed, unattractive push chairs he used to see in the street. Barenbrug wanted to design something that a man would be happy to push around and eventually came up with the Bugaboo.
The Bugaboo hit the streets of London in 2003 and became an extraordinary hit. Trendy young mothers rushed out to buy themselves a Bugaboo as soon as they saw celebrities like Sarah Cox, Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney pushing their new babies around in them.
However, the Bugaboo was not simply a fad. Katherine Kowalski, a 30 year old mother says that one of the problems of becoming a mum is that your sense of style has to change as more practical problems become important. Buying a Bugaboo made her feel stylish again.
Mumsnet recently rated the Bugaboo 8.1 out of 10 making it the sites best buggy. One of the major advantages of the push chair seems to be that although it is initially quite expensive, it does tend to hold its value and is easy to sell on.
Alfred Martin, who decided to review the trendiest pushchairs on the market, says that the Bugaboo is for successful young women who want to have successful children, although the small front wheels do tend to get stuck in the mud.
