The Beatles return with Rock Band

September 8, 2009

The video game industry is bracing itself for the release of The Beatles: Rock Band this week in the hope that it will be the game that tempts mums and dads who usually buy for their children to buy this one for themselves.

The latest in the Rock Band series has taken two years to develop and its creation has involved the direct input of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivier Harrison and Yoko Ono. Giles Martin, son of the Beatle’s producer George Martin, was also enrolled to look after music production on the game.

Marketing has been intense with MTV (who owns Harmonix, the games developer) playing some of the songs as music videos on its station. MTV have also sent out samplers of the game to bars so that owners will be able to include songs before the release of the game at their Rock Band Bar Nights. The game has also attracted support from stores in the U.S. not normally known for selling computer games.

Part of the attraction of the game is not just the songs and the visuals but the peripherals that can come with it. Replicas of Lennon’s Rickenbacker 325, McCartney’s Hofner bass and Harrison’s Gretsch Duo Jet guitar will be available along with Starr’s Ludwig drum-set. Lead artist on the game Dare Matheson says that he really wants people to think that they are playing along with John Lennon as he sits just two feet away.

The games developers are already planning to roll out more of the Beatle’s albums on Rock Band and Yoko Ono herself has said the John Lennon would have loved it.
