Tesco revamps overtime scheme

November 15, 2010

Staying true to their popular sloga – every little helps – Tesco has launched its latest employee work hours scheme, which will allow staff of the popular retailer more flexibility when signing on for overtime.

The scheme, called ‘slivers of time’ in pilots, has already been trialing for one year. It allows each worker to sign on for four-hour time slots at either their home store or another nearby Tesco branch.

The initiative will be officially launched just before Christmas as the retailer gears up for the busiest shopping season of the year. The new overtime booking system will allow employees and managers to track more easily which staff members are available when.

Arnie Herrema, Tesco’s director for its flexibility programme, said that the major challenge facing this industry was providing work force in shifting shopping patterns. He added that the ‘slivers of time’ programme allows managers to schedule extra hours more efficiently.

With nearly 2,500 outlets in the UK that require 340,000 staff to operate, Tesco has its own internal labour market, in which, it can pull some workers from one store and use them at another. The system will allow workers to maximise their available times in order to get in extra hours and provide the company with much-needed extra labour. Tesco said that already 10,000 staff members had signed on for the scheme.
