Tesco joins with Microsoft’s Silverlight

September 9, 2009

This autumn shoppers at Tesco’s will be able to take advantage of a partnership with Microsoft Corp. that has just been announced. Customers in the U.K. will now be able to buy digital versions of movies they would usually pick from the shelf and get them downloaded onto their computer. The virtual DVD experience will be possible through Microsoft’s Silverlight technology.

The virtual DVDs will contain similar content to physical DVDs such as special features, director commentaries and bonus content, but in addition, consumers will be able to access features from the net such as special offers, games, music downloads and up to date trailers. Silverlight will also allow users to have movie parties with other people where users will be able to discuss the film and chat online.

The new technology will give Tesco customers the ability to access new innovations as the major studios roll them out. Category director for Entertainment at Tesco, Rob Salter is extremely excited by the new partnership and says that it will allow customers to become a part of the constantly improving virtual DVD experiences that Silverlight will provide. The system will run across all of the popular network browsers and is intended to give a rich film watching experience combined with greater opportunities to access networks.

Senior director for the Media & Entertainment business in the Communications Sector at Microsoft, Gabriele Di Piazza said that Microsoft was constantly working on ways to enhance the video watching experience and hoped that the Tesco / Microsoft alliance would give customers the ultimate experience in virtual DVDs.
