Tesco customers greeted with Easter items at New Year

January 3, 2011

Having just barely rung in the New Year, customers at several Tesco stores were baffled to see Easter eggs adorning the shelves.

Tesco centres in Portwood and Burnage in the Greater Manchester area have come under fire for their premature stocking of Easter holiday items. Angering several religious figures and confusing many customers, the popular UK supermarket had already put out chocolate bunnies and eggs.

In a move that church leaders have slammed as ‘absurd’, Tesco has said it is simply responding to customer demand to place the items out earlier. Despite Easter falling late this year – 24 April – several customers, according to Tesco, had asked the products be made available.

Julia Dodgson, a resident in Stockport, said it was a mark of greed by the supermarkets to put Easter essentials out so early. She also said that Tesco would do better to focus on one festival at a time.

Angie Brown from Bredbury said that she was at the store with her daughter Millie when she noticed the eggs. She called the notion of Easter items being put out before the New Year ‘ridiculous’.

Father John Flynn, who represents the Catholic diocese in Salford, called the decision ‘odd’ and said that he believed the move was ‘misplaced’. Tesco has defended the move, however, saying it was happy to give customers what they had requested.

I leave in America and would like to purchase a bag that has Ladybirds on it. Can some one in the store contact me and let me know how to go about doing this. Thank you, Luisa.
