Tesco blunder as they ask Orange Flute band to open new store
November 18, 2009
In a bid to add a little pep to the opening of one of its new stores Tesco booked the Bellshill Imperial flute band to perform four songs as part of the celebrations. However what Tesco failed to realize until the last minute was that they had asked an Orange Order flute band to perform where West of Scotland sectarian feeling could well have been be offended.
When managers of the store realized what they had done they quickly asked the band who were in the process of setting up to pack up their instruments and leave. One of the stores customers said that it was shocking to see the band standing around in their uniforms at the opening of a Tesco store. One representative of the supermarket giant initially said that the band’s performance had been cancelled because the car park had become too crowded. However Tesco later had to admit that they had asked the band not to perform because they did not wish to cause offence to anyone in the local community.
A disappointed looking band packed away its instruments after warming up to perform their music as a number of onlookers, including some people wearing Rangers shirts, looked on. MSP for Hamilton North and Bellshill, Michael McMahon said that Tesco probably had very little idea of what they were doing when they initially asked the band which was formed to play at Orange Order engagements to play jigs and a hymn at the opening of a new store.
