Teacher suspended for dead dad writing assignment

November 23, 2009

A teacher at a Primary School in Tyne and Weir has been suspended pending an investigation after she allegedly asked her pupils to write creatively about what it would have been like to have their fathers amongst those who died in the Twin Towers after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Twenty-nine-year-old Kathy Young who has been teaching at Oxclose Village Primary School for one year reportedly made her seven-year-old students burst into tears after asking them to imagine the scenario.

Parents of the students are outraged by Young’s assignment. One parent has said that many of the students were left traumatized by the experience. Another said that their child is still too upset to talk about it. Both Sunderland County Council and Mrs. Young have said that they cannot make any comment on the accusations at present.

However a member of Mrs. Young’s family has come forward to defend her. He says that the allegations that students were traumatized or upset are totally without foundation going on to say that none of the students left the classroom in tears. He also said that Mrs. Young never used the phrase ‘dead dad’ and was rather asking the children to think of situations under which they might never have met their father. The family member also said that as a mother to a nine-year-old daughter Mrs. Young would never deliberately try to upset a young student. He concluded that she was both an excellent mother and teacher.

Mrs. Young will remain suspended on full pay until an investigation is completed.
