Teacher dismissed after offering to pray for sick pupil
December 21, 2009
A home-visit teacher has spoken out about her distress at being given the sack after offering to pray for one of her students. Olive Jones teaches mathematics to children who are not well enough to make it into a school. She was conducting one of her home-visits when she was told that her student was too ill to receive the tuition. Mrs. Jones then allegedly asked if she could pray for the well being of the child but was told by the mother that the family was not Christian. Mrs. Jones claims that she did not press the matter. However the tuition service who employed her said that they felt they had to let her go following complaints that mother and child had been upset by her comments.
Fifty-four-year-old Mrs. Jones has been a teacher for twenty years. She said that she is being treated like she has committed a crime and re-asserts that when the mother of the child said a prayer would not be necessary she let the matter go. She went on to say that she was shocked that the country had now become a place where people were not allowed to mention their faith. She went on to point out that her dismissal now meant that there was a black mark against her name and that it would be difficult to find another job all because she offered to pray for a sick child.
The North Somerset tuition service which employed Mrs. Jones has said that sharing ones faith with a child could be construed as bullying.
