Tallest building in the word opens in Dubai

January 4, 2010

The world’s tallest building by a long shot will be opened imminently in Dubai. The tower is called the Burj Dubai, which is simply translated as the Dubai Tower, and stands at around 2,625 feet. As well as being the tallest building in the world by around 984 feet the Burj Dubai has the most stories of any building in the world, the highest occupied floor of any building in the world and the highest observation deck.

Initially the plans for the Burj Dubai would have seen the finished structure standing around 33 feet higher than its closest rival, the Taipai 101 in Taiwan. However the tower’s structural engineer, Bill Baker from architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill based in Chicago said the whole project became an experiment in just how tall they could make the final design. Emaar Properties who are in charge of developing the project apparently just kept pushing for the designs to become taller and taller. The building began in 2004 and at its peak another floor was being added to the structure every three days.

The official opening of the Burj Dubai will be by His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and a firework display is set to mark the occasion. Security is expected to be very tight and there are reports that security personnel attending the event will number around 1,000 and will include snipers and plain clothed detectives. The opening of the tower will also help take the focus off Dubai’s decidedly shaky financial situation.
