Surgeon shocks young drinkers with gruesome slideshow
December 18, 2009
A surgeon who gives slideshows to children illustrating the dangers of getting drunk says that it reduces alcohol consumption by those who have seen it by up to a third. Professor Iain Hutchinson is a facial reconstruction surgeon who has compiled images of his patient’s injuries to show to children in order to illustrate just how bad the results of getting drunk can be. The images include one of a boy who has had his nose bitten off in a fight and a girl who fell over whilst drunk, split her nose open and lost two of her teeth. Hutchinson said that he shows children the images in the hope that it will mean he never has to see them on his operating table.
Professor Hutchinson says that his slide show is effective because young people are extremely concerned about their appearance. He said that telling people they might be sick after drinking too much is not going to have much of an effect but by showing children that they could be disfigured for life after excessive drinking certainly gets their attention.
One boy who recently saw the slideshow said that he would definitely not be getting drunk quite so often in the future. Another said that he did not want to risk deforming his face by of drinking too much because it could affect his potential to get a job in the future. The country’s Chief Medical Officer has just announced that children who start drinking alcohol before the age of fifteen are putting themselves at risk of health problems later in life.
