Storage Units are the new garden shed

August 30, 2009

Storage units are no longer just a place to store boxes full of stuff that you don’t need cluttering up your home.

The U.K. boasts on average the smallest homes in Europe and storage units have become the new spare room or garden shed for many.

Chief executive of the Self Storage Association, Rodney Walker is convinced that storage units will become “lifestyle” spaces. “I knew a lady in Paddington who kept her library in one, and a gentleman was doing the same thing in a unit down the road,” he said. ”They used to appear almost every day to read their books, because these units not only offer extra space, but they’re quiet as well.”

The units are not just places for people looking for quiet. Those who want to make noise are also turning to the facilities. A Doncaster scout band meets at a storage facility once a week to practice. Band leader Don Green said that as well as having a place away from people’s houses to practice, the unit also provides a central location making it easy for everyone to meet up.

Andrew Roberts, a musician from South London uses his unit for practicing the guitar. He says that 24 hour access means that he can play as loud as he likes, whenever he likes.

Rodney Walker says that people can use the units for pretty much anything. The only real rule is that they do not become living spaces.
