Sting slams X Factor

November 12, 2009

Sting has hit out at ITV’s X Factor saying that it has very little to do with music, that it is nothing more than a karaoke event and that its so called judges have little discernable talent other than that of being able to promote themselves. He went on to say that he was genuinely sorry that none of the contestants were ever going to follow a meaningful music career and that he felt saddened at the way they were humiliated each week when they were voted off.

Sting, who found fame with his band The Police and has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career, said that he was appalled by the show. He pointed out that the contestant’s mentors did nothing to develop the performer’s individuality because they were just turned into versions of boy bands, Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.

He went on to say that he feared shows such as X Factor were setting music back and that television was not the media for producing future musical acts. Sting said that it was in the arena of clubs and pubs that musical talent was born and that the show was never going to contribute anything to the country’s proud musical pedigree. He went on to say that the show was little more than a preposterous soap opera.

When asked for a comment a spokesperson for X Factor simply said that Sting was allowed to have his own opinion. It is also probable that his views will do little to put the show’s millions of viewers off from tuning in each week.
