Stephen Fry picks up Special Recognition Award

January 21, 2010

Twitter aficionado Stephen Fry recently disappointed his legions of fans on the social networking site by announcing he would not be tweeting for the time being because he had to clear his diary in order to finish the second installment of his autobiography. However he still managed to find the time to pick up a Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards this week.

Fry collected the Special Recognition award as well as another for Most Popular Star Travel Documentary at the ceremony held at London’s O2 Arena. The Special Recognition gong was presented to Fry by Bamber Gascoigne who was the host of the quiz University Challenge on which Fry made his television debut whilst a student at Cambridge University. The star of much loved comedy programmes such as Blackadder, A Bit of Fry and Laurie and QI was obviously moved by the accolade. He said that he had absolutely no previous knowledge that he would be the recipient of the award and that the tribute which included messages from Prince Charles and long time friend and collaborator Hugh Laurie was one of the most remarkable he had ever witnessed. In his usual self-deprecating style Fry declared that he felt unworthy of the honour.

Other winners of the night included Dr. Who which saw David Tennant pick up the award for Outstanding Drama Performance; Coronation Street which was voted Most popular Serial Drama and X Factor which scooped the gong for Most Popular Talent Show. Probably the biggest surprise of the night was the appearance of Vanilla Ice during a performance of Ice Ice Baby mixed with Queen’s Under Pressure.
