Staycationers refuse to miss out on holiday cuisine
August 31, 2009
As Visit Britain releases figures that suggest that one out of every five people who would have gone abroad this summer staying in the U.K.; supermarkets report that there has been a record demand for exotic food that most would only buy when holidaying abroad.
Waitrose says that it has seen demand for European dishes double. Chorizo sales have gone up by 100% and sales of moules mariniere (mussels cooked in a garlic sauce) have risen by 50%.
French pastry sales have also risen. Pain au chocolate has seen an increase of 9.3% and croissants have seen a rise of 33%. French pates are also flying off the shelves with demand for Ardennes pate shooting up by 48%
And it is not just the British taste for continental cuisine that is on the rise. People unable to visit Thailand are getting their fix by eating Thai red curry, sales of which are up by 76% or by eating Pad Thai, which has seen sales rise by 52%.
Foodpeople’s food trend expert, Charles Banks says that he is not at all surprised by the sudden rise in popularity of exotic foods. “Whether it be Lasagna from Italy, Thai Red Curry from Asia or mussels from France, consumers are clearly finding new ways of getting the ‘travel fix’ that they have become used to in more prosperous times.”
