November 11, 2009

The London Evening Standard has announced its choice for the twenty most influential people living and working in the country’s capital. Boris Johnson, the London Mayor has been voted to the top spot by a group of journalists and experts who annually compile a list of 1,000 people who are most influential across a range of professions such as politics, the arts, fashion, music and sport.

The London mayor was voted into first position because experts said he was unique. They went on to say that even though he had his problems he was still completely in charge. Other front runners are Lord Mandelson and Gordon Brown who took second and third place respectively. The panel of judges only gave the countries prime minister third position because they said he was too troubled by the country’s economic problems and members of his own party wishing to take his premiership from him.

Fourth place was given to Tory leader David Cameron who judges thought would move up the rankings as soon as he took power. Eleventh place was given to X Factor judge Simon Cowell who the panel said deserved the position because of his massive influence on both sides of the Atlantic. Stella McCartney made the top-twenty because of her reputation as a clothes designer and pop stars Lily Allen and Dizzy Rascal were also lauded as wielding influence in the capital.

Geordie Greig, editor of the Standard said that the list showed just how important London is to those who want to get ahead whatever their field of expertise. He said that the sheer concentration of influential people in London was one of the things that made it so great.
