Stab vests for the World Cup are a joke

January 20, 2010

A company registered in London and based in South Africa has come under fire from football fans for playing on people’s fears that they might be in danger of violent attacks during this summer’s Football World Cup. The stab vests are being marketed as a way for people to ensure that they are protected against weapons which have spikes or sharp edges on them. They are being sold under the name of Protektorvest and can be ordered via the internet for £42.00 each.

London England Fans Association spokesman, Mark Perryman said that the Protektorvest was an extremely cynical way of making money. He points out that large numbers of cricket and rugby fans have just visited South Africa and as far as he’s aware most made it home without being stabbed. He also said that if there were any real fears for fan safety in South Africa this summer then governing body Fifa would never have awarded the tournament to the country.

Although South Africa does have one of the highest levels of violent crime in the world the police have assured football fans that they will be well protected. Around 450,000 fans are expected to travel to South Africa for the tournament and there will be 40,000 police on hand to make sure that the games are as trouble free as possible. Rich Mkhondo who is with the South Africa World Cup organizing committee described the stab vests as a joke and pointed out that such protection has never been required by anyone visiting the country to watch a sporting event.
