Snow causes more traffic chaos and school closures

January 21, 2010

Heavy snow yesterday across the south west of the country caused disruption on the roads and resulted in a number of schools being forced to close their doors. The gritters were out in force early on Wednesday morning treating major roads and some minor ones in order to keep them open to traffic. In Herefordshire some routes were affected by localized flooding but the council reassured drivers that there were adequate levels of rock salt available to grit all primary routes. The council also reassured residents that collection of refuse would also go ahead as usual as long as the weather did not turn too bad. Across Herefordshire and Shropshire eight schools had to close because of the snow. The heaviest snow was expected to fall in the Cotswolds but was expected to turn into light rain showers later on.

In Gloucestershire the snow caused significant delays to traffic on the A437. The A417 just outside Cheltenham was also described as gridlocked with traffic. At Sapperton a lorry accident caused the A419 to be closed for a time. Although around fifty schools in the county were forced to close because of the weather the County Council insisted that all exams would still be going ahead.

Paula Hannaford, a Duty Inspector in Gloucestershire said that she realised that it must be tedious for drivers once again to find themselves frustrated in their efforts to get the children to school and themselves to work but insisted that everything was being done to get things moving again.
