Sky reaches 10 million customers
November 9, 2010
Satellite provider BSkyB celebrated the completion of its goal to reach 10 million subscribers today.
The firm, which had said it wanted to reach 10 million viewers by the end of the year, has met its target. Announcing the milestone, the broadcaster had originally set the target in August 2004, when the company had reached 7.4 million customers.
Since 2004, the satellite broadcaster has extended its services to include home phones, Hi-Def TV and speedy broadband internet. Its most recent offering, however, was just announced this month in the form of 3D channels.
Launched in 1989, Sky is now the preferred provider for 36 per cent of UK residents. The group’s chief executive Jeremy Darroch said Sky makes its success by operating as a forward-moving company increasing its appeal with innovative new services.
Mr Darroch added that Sky retains its customers and attracts potential new members by pushing forward with a variety of new products. The subscription-only TV company has seen widespread success with its exclusive access to the English Premiere League football matches. It also offers a wide range of movie channels that have become popular.
In October, the satellite provider said that it was nearing its 10 million goal after signing an unexpected 96,000 customers in the first quarter of the year.
