January 22, 2010

Following a request by Prime Minister Gordon Brown that Simon Cowell make a record to raise money to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake it has been announced that the song will be a cover version of the REM classic Everybody Hurts. The band has said that they are willing to waive all royalties from the song and Gordon Brown has announced that sales of the single will be exempt from VAT. The Prime Minister said that he believes that British people want to help those suffering in Haiti and that Simon Cowell will be able to raise a large amount of money by releasing the song.

Simon Cowell says that the job will be a logistical nightmare but that it will get done. Stars of Cowell’s television talent show X Factor have already agreed to put their names forward. Michael Buble has confirmed that he will sing as has Leona Lewis. Cheryl Cole one of Cowell’s fellow judges on X Factor was one of the first to confirm that she would be taking part and Rod Stewart and JLS will also be in the studio. Cowell has also put the call in to Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Take That and Coldplay amongst others.

A global celebrity telethon is also being organised called Hope for Haiti Now and will feature performances by Beyonce and Madonna. Actors Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney have already said that they will be donating $1 million each to go towards relief efforts in the devastated country.
