Shopping locally is cheaper and better for the environment

A new campaign has been launched to try and encourage more people to visit their local shops when they want to top up on groceries rather than take a car trip to the supermarket.

My Shop Your Shop points out that if you get in your car to go and pick up £10 worth of shopping from the supermarket, then unless the supermarket is less than four miles away, you are going to be out of pocket compared to if you had popped out to your local shop.

Alan Toft, chairman of My Shop Your Shop points out that the habit of people going to supermarkets on “small basket” shopping trips is increasing. He said: “Against a background of rising petrol prices, this differential makes top-up shops done by car wasteful. We want independent retailers to point this out to shoppers before they jump into their car for top-up trips to superstores.”

Dr Alan Hallsworth of Surrey University is studying the hidden costs of driving to the shops points out that although larger retailers advertise their value for money, in the case of a basket worth £10 or under then local shops provide better value for money.
