Shawcross Added to England Roster after Ramsey Leg Break

March 1, 2010

Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has unfortunately been headlined in the news over the weekend after a challenge on Aaron Ramsey caused the Arsenal midfielder’s leg to break on Saturday. After the incident, Shawcross left the field crying and Ramsey was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Shawcross has been widely criticized, as it was felt by many that the tackle was malicious. However, it was ruled that the injury wasn’t intentional, and Shawcross was making an attempt to play the ball. Despite the criticism, the defender’s teammates have been giving him support, saying that Shawcross wasn’t intentionally trying to hurt Ramsey, yet the injury is unfortunate.

Shawcross is also being fully backed by England manager Fabio Capello, who has also added the defender to his lineup in the match on Wednesday against Egypt at Wembley. Reports claimed that the footballer was hesitant to joint the team on Sunday, as he was very distraught over the incident from the day before. However, after Potters manager Tony Pulis gave him a pep talk, the defender was seen at England’s Hertfordshire base that night. The senior defenders for the team – Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Rio Ferdinand – have been absent because of injuries.

Meanwhile, Arsenal posted a statement on their website confirming that Ramsey’s surgery successfully reduced the fractures to his fibula and tibia. However, they said that the midfielder will be out for the rest of the season, while some reports say he could be out for a whole year. The website statement also wished him a speedy recovery and return.
