Several Vodafone staff sacked over data breach
January 14, 2011
Vodafone has sacked several staff members in NSW after its database was breached and sensitive customer data was leaked.
The company said that it will continue to investigate whether or not the password for its customer database was misused or sold to criminals. The telecommunications firm issued a statement yesterday saying a number of employees had been fired and the NSW Police had been contacted.
Vodafone refused to give details on how many workers were let go or what sector of the company they worked for. In a bit to prevent any future mishaps, the firm said it would change the password to its database every 24 hours.
Chief executive, Nigel Dews said that the company has also brought in independent security experts in order to review its systems.
The Privacy Commissioner has also launched an investigation into the way Vodafone handles customer information. Under current laws, however, the commissioner is unable to fine companies if they have already launched their own investigation into the security breach.
Communications Consumer Action Network said that customers are right to worry about breaches to their privacy. Vodafone is also looking at a class action lawsuit from customers that believe they did not get premium service.
