Second earthquake strikes Haiti

January 21, 2010

A second earthquake has hit the already destroyed Caribbean island of Haiti causing panic and screams from those who are already almost at breaking point. Although a number of aftershocks have been felt since the January 12th earthquake the most recent tremor hit 6.1 on the Richter scale. Anything above 5.9 is officially termed an earthquake. The fear is that more quakes and aftershocks will collapse buildings that are still standing but have been badly damaged. This fear means that most Haitians now spend their nights in the open under makeshift tents. The fear of further quakes is being dulled for many by the lack of relief supplies. Allegedly victims of the quake staying just minutes from the airport where supplies are being flown in around the clock have received nothing.

Amidst the despair and destruction there was at least some cause for celebration as a twelve-year-old girl and her seven-year-old brother were found miraculously alive underneath the rubble. The discovery of the pair has stunned medical teams who have no idea how they can have survived for so long.

In the U.K. pop impresario Simon Cowell has been asked by the Prime Minister to release a single to raise money for the people of Haiti. He said that although there was little time he would make sure he came up with something. It has been reported that amongst those already on board are Robbie Williams, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Apparently Cowell has managed to persuade Gordon Brown to waive all VAT on sales of the single.
