Scenes of rioting as Manchester United take on Barnsley
October 28, 2009
Barnsley Football Club has accused fans from Manchester United of causing substantial damage at the Barnsley ground after some fans went on the rampage. Four Manchester United fans and Four Barnsley fans have been arrested by police. The fourth-round Carling Cup match saw Manchester United walk away with a 2-0 win but was marred by the scenes of violence.
Fans in the north stand started to throw bottles at policemen in riot gear as they made attempts to restore order. Police were forced to use dogs to persuade fans to back off of the pitch and even stewards who were on the pitch had to endure food being hurled at them during the match.
One incident saw the stadium’s catering staff having to barricade themselves into a food kiosk whilst rampaging fans stole food off the shelves and broke into the cash register for the money. The staff were all very frightened by the twenty-five minute ordeal.
The police say that although eight people had been arrested there were no reports of injuries except for one officer who received a minor injury to his face. Two other men were arrested at the Barnsley train station as they stood on the tracks in an attempt to stop a train leaving for Sheffield.
Barnsley has blamed Manchester United fans for the damage and has complained to the police who say they will be making an independent investigation into what happened. Barnsley said they will know more after they carefully study the ground’s CCTV camera footage.
