Salt mine promises to work hard to keep the roads clear

January 6, 2010

Staff at Winsford Salt Mine in Cheshire have said that they will be continuing to work around the clock in order to do their very best to keep the country’s roads clear of ice and snow. The mine is the biggest of its kind in the U.K. and with around 140 miles of underground roads claims to be able to produce 30,000 tonnes of salt every week. Winsford Salt Union is in charge of running the salt mine and has issued a statement confirming that its employees will be continuing to mine the rock salt 24-hours-a-day in order to keep drivers on British roads as safe as possible. However it did point out that unprecedented demand this winter meant that some local authorities stocks of salt may be running low. Winsford Salt Union said that at present they would be concentrating on getting supplies out to those authorities who are struggling to meet demand. The company also said that they were working closely with government authorities to make sure that supplies were making it to the areas most in need.

Because of the prolonged bad weather many local authorities are concentrating most of their efforts on keeping major roads open. Winsford Salt Union went on to say that ideally they would like to be able to promise all authorities that their demands for salt would be met, but that because of the continuing snow falls this may not ne possible in every case. The company claims that they were able to fulfill all pre Christmas deliveries to local authorities but that the surprisingly bad weather meant that some stocks were inevitably now running low.
