Robbie Williams denied number one spot by Alexandra Burke

October 19, 2009

Robbie Williams has been beaten to the U.K. singles chart number one slot by X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke. Burke’s single Bad Boys has managed to sell twice as many copies as Bodies which is the song that marks Robbie Williams’ return to the music scene. Both songs were performed live on last week’s X Factor but with sales of 185,000 burke’s song has easily taken the crown as the U.K.’s biggest selling single of 2009.

Bodies has sold a respectable 90,000 copies since its release and industry experts say that Williams would easily have secured the top spot on any other week of the year. Burke says that she is absolutely ecstatic about the news. She said that she wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped her achieve this success and was very pleased to be finally sharing her new music with her fans.

Gennaro Castaldo from HMV says that being able to beat Robbie Williams and his comeback single is no mean feat. He went on to say that it proves that as well as being able to maintain the fan base she built up during her time on X Factor the figures showed that Burke has also managed to grow it.

Robbie Williams should not be too down hearted about taking the number two spot as this latest release marks the twentieth time he has had a top five single since he went solo thirteen years ago.
