Robbie Williams admits that proposal was in jest
November 30, 2009
After a great deal of speculation as to whether or not Robbie Williams’ proposal to his girlfriend on Australian radio was genuine, the singer has announced that it was not. The verisimilitude of the on-air proposal seemed to be confirmed by Jan Williams, Robbie’s mother who told a U.K. radio station that she was pleased for the couple and was out shopping for an engagement card.
Robbie popped the question whilst he and his girlfriend, Ayda Field were making an appearance on a show on Sydney’s 2Day FM. He declared his love for Ayda and then asked her if she would consider becoming his wife. Ayda then consented and said that she would very much like to be betrothed to the former member of Take That. As Robbie did not have a ring to give her he was loaned one by the host of the radio show, Jackie O.
Representatives of Robbie Williams in the U.K. announced that although Robbie had asked Ayda to marry him live on air he had done so as a piece of fun and that the pair were not really engaged to each other.
Robbie has since posted up a short message on his official blog telling fans that the couple are not really betrothed.
Jan Williams announced that she had known of her sons intentions to propose to Ayda for some time so the announcement had come as no surprise. She went on to say that because the couple had been together for three years it was about time Robbie proposed and that she would be very pleased to have Ayda as a daughter in law.
