Ricky Gervais used as editor on comedy show PhoneShop

Comedian Ricky Gervais has decided to return to television in Britain as a script editor on a new series about life in a mobile phone shop. A pilot for the new show was screened on British television last week and even before audiences were allowed to air their opinions E4 commissioned a six-part series. Ricky Gervais became involved after he was sent a rough edit of the show by writer, producer and creator, Phil Bowker. Bowker, who is also head of comedy at Talkback Thames and who is responsible for giving Gervais his television break was concerned that one of the shows characters was too much like the David Brent character created by Gervais in his hit comedy, The Office. He sent the rough cut to Gervais to get his opinion. Apparently Gervais was so impressed with the show that he asked Bowker if he could work on it.

PhoneShop has been described as an extremely simple concept. It’s about people who work in a phone shop said Angela Jain who is the head of E4. She went on to say that everyone was very pleased that Gervais had decided to get involved with the project. She said that Gervais has managed to tighten up some aspects of the comedy and went on to praise his writing and comedic abilities.

PhoneShop is set in a shopping mall and revolves around the character of Christopher who is set the challenge of selling a phone before the shop closes. Jain said that as everyone now carries a mobile phone they will all be able to relate to the banal goings on in a mobile phone store.
