Ricky Gervais chosen to host Golden Globes

October 27, 2009

It has been announced that Ricky Gervais is to be the official host for the Golden Globes on January 17th 2010. He will play host at a ceremony that is often referred to as Hollywood’s biggest party because of its laid back and informal format. Those attending the awards will have drinks and dinner before the announcements are made and this often means that guests are more relaxed than at some more formal ceremonies. The event is often seen as an introduction to the bigger Oscars ceremony and gives an indication on who will be the big winners at the glitzier ceremony later in the year.

When commenting on his role as first official host of the Golden Globes since 1995 Gervais said that there were some offers that you simply can’t turn down. He said that he had been offered similar roles in the past and said no.

The Golden Globes are awards voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and cover the best of the previous twelve month’s films and television shows. The awards will go out live on NBC.

Head of alternative programming at NBC, Paul Telegdy said that he was very pleased to have Gervais presenting the awards as he has been responsible for some of the funniest moments at a number of awards shows in previous years. Gervais said that he felt that the Golden Globes was a ceremony at which he felt he would be allowed a lot of freedom to play host in his own way.
