Religious protests in Glasgow over transsexual Jesus

November 5, 2009

A new play being shown as part of an arts festival in Scotland has provoked outrage from religious protesters. The play is called Jesus, Queen of Heaven and is being staged at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre as part of the Glasgay! arts festival. The play follows the trials of a Christ who is depicted as a transsexual woman. According to press releases the daughter of God will be revealing her miracles, sayings and testimonies.

Three-hundred protesters gathered outside the theatre for the plays opening night. Some were carrying banners with them disputing the idea that Jesus was queen of heaven and explaining that the son of God was not a pervert. Festival organizers described some of the placards as fairly provocative and said that they could be interpreted as trying to stir up anti gay feeling. The protesters proceeded to sing hymns outside the theatre.

One of the shows producers said that it was not their intention to offend anyone or incite anger and was part of a festival meant to offer greater insight for outsiders into the gay community. The play is meant to be a fictitious work about the artist’s relationship with religion as a transsexual, said producer Steven Thompson. He went on to say that the plays organizers welcomed anyone who genuinely wanted to understand the intention behind the work to join the audience. He also recognized people’s rights to disagree with the plays opinions.

The author and star of Jesus, Queen of Heaven is transsexual playwright Jo Clifford. The play will be running until Saturday.
