Rage Against The Machine are Christmas number one
December 21, 2009
Rage Against The Machine have managed to scoop the U.K. single’s chart number one position for Christmas. The internet based battle to keep X Factor winner Joe McElderry from walking away with the prize has worked, much to the shock of many in the music industry.
Spokesman for HMV, Gennaro Castaldo said that the result was probably the biggest ever upset in chart history. He said that he thought that Joe might have sold more singles if the weather hadn’t been quite so bad. He went onto say that Killing In The Name might not be the most festive of tunes but that it’s anti-commercial message was certainly an appropriate one for people who wanted to protest against Simon Cowell’s continued dominance of the charts at Christmas. Official Charts Company spokesman, Martin Talbot said that Rage Against The Machine had to be congratulated as beating the winner of the X Factor was an extremely difficult thing for any band to do.
Simon Cowell appeared gracious in defeat and said that he had to congratulate Jon and Tracy Morter who were behind the internet campaign for making the race to number one so exciting this year. He also said that he was disappointed for Joe because he had worked so hard.
Joe McElderry also appeared to take the defeat in his stride saying that he had already got more than he ever could have wished for by winning X Factor. In the past week Killing In The Name chalked up more than half-a-million sales. McElderry’s The Climb hit 450,000.
