Queen to praise troop efforts in her Christmas address
December 24, 2009
The Queen’s traditional Christmas message to the Commonwealth is due to air as usual on Christmas day at 3.00pm. This year the monarch will be paying a special tribute to all those who are serving in Afghanistan. The Queen is the head of the armed services in Britain and is said to take an especially keen interest in members of the army, navy and air force who are serving both abroad and at home. It is also said that she will be stressing the importance of continued communication between the countries of the commonwealth, especially over matters that are of universal concern. When addressing the members of the Commonwealth in November at a meeting in Trinidad she stressed that all nations should do as much as they can to combat the issues presented by climate change.
The royal family will be together at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Christmas day and will sit down to watch the Queen speak after their traditional Christmas lunch. The royals will also attend the Christmas morning service as they do every year at St. Mary Magdalene Church. Whilst attending the service it is usual for members of the royal family to meet and greet the locals as well as those who have come to see them. This year however the Queen has been outspoken about the increased intrusion of the press and it is likely that more efforts will be made to keep the cameras from prying into what goes on over Christmas on the estate this year.
