Police urge shoppers and party goers to be vigilant

December 18, 2009

Police are asking the public to be vigilant when out doing their Christmas shopping or attending parties over the festive period because of a reported rise in robberies. In an attempt to track down notorious robbers and con artists police have issued ten images taken by CCTV cameras of suspects they believe are at large in the West End. The pictures have been published after a spate of crimes including one thief trying to make off with £10,000 in cash which had been withdrawn by a woman from a bank in Mayfair. Other crimes involved a man giving a member of the public a hug in Soho Square in the early hours of the morning before making off with the victim’s wallet and mobile phone. Another of the suspects allegedly tried to make off with a man’s cash after he had taken it out of a bank on the Edgware Road.

A recent police statement revealed that more robbers than ever are being arrested and prosecuted in the capital. Figures show that offences are already well up on those reported last year.

Detective Inspector Sean Oxley has asked members of the public to come forward with any information they might have on any of the ten suspects. He went on to say that any one who is out and about this Christmas should keep an eye on their possessions at all times. He also urged people to leave non essential valuables at home or locked in the office when going out to a Christmas party.
